Add Giphy support to chat

Howdy,

I speak memes fluently. It would be really cool to have an easy way to share memes on the chat.

I’d like to suggest to look into a Giphy integration for the chat – there’s plugin for that, but I have no idea if it works with the site setup. https://wbcomdesigns.com/downloads/buddypress-giphy/

Thanks for the suggestion. We try to keep the site as light and fast as possible while animated gifs will increase the server load significantly. So it would work with the site, but I believe it is not a good choice. The chat does allow for some copying and pasting. You could try to paste the memes you like. It can be that it works. Opening a loooong thread with a lot of memes could be slow though but that is for you to consider. 😉

Thanks, I understand the concern – the plugin has a setting that allow you to configure how many Giphys to load at a maximum, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue on the client-side rendering.

As for the server-side, if I’m not mistaken this is just a integration to add an img tag, so it shouldn’t be too heavy.

I might be wrong, but I think there’s a real possibility that this does not impact performance too much. But I understand if you still think it’s not a good idea.
